Abstract

With the deep embedding of artificial intelligence (AI) into the publishing industry, the transformation of intelligent publishing is no longer adequately explained by the adoption of isolated technologies or by improvements in individual production links. A more consequential shift is taking place at the organizational level, where platformization is becoming an important mode through which publishing activities are restructured. Against this background, this study examines how AI reshapes the developmental logic of intelligent publishing and why platformization has emerged as a key orientation of this transformation. Rather than treating platformization as the automatic outcome of digital upgrading, this study understands it as a structural process in which data, interfaces, algorithms, and governance arrangements reorganize value creation, resource circulation, and multi-actor collaboration in publishing. This study adopts a conceptual and analytical approach. It first clarifies the concept of platformization and distinguishes it from digitalization and intelligentization to avoid reducing organizational change to technological application. On this basis, a four-dimensional analytical framework composed of technological infrastructure, resource organization, connection mechanisms, and governance rules is developed. This framework is then used to analyze the platformization of intelligent publishing in three interrelated respects. First, this paper discusses how AI drives platform strategy formation on the supply side, the matching side, and the value side. Second, it explains the internal logic of platformization through a staged process of platform-first infrastructure building, hub-based aggregation, and intelligent collaboration sustained by feedback and governance. Third, it identifies four practical pathways through which platformization may be advanced: digital infrastructure construction, semantic reorganization of digital resources, multi-actor connection mechanisms, and platform governance centered on access responsibility, benefit distribution, and compliance review. Representative industry practices are incorporated as contextual evidence to illustrate how these mechanisms operate in publishing contexts. This study argues that platformization should not be understood as a simple layering of intelligent functions onto existing publishing processes. Its formation depends on whether content can be transformed into reusable and callable resources, whether publishing relations can be reorganized into networked structures, and whether collaboration can be stabilized through ongoing feedback and governance. In this sense, AI is significant not merely because it improves efficiency but because it changes the conditions under which publishing resources are structured, circulated, matched with users, and converted into sustainable service capabilities. The analysis further reveals that as content shifts from finished products to structured resources, recommendation and distribution systems move from communication tools to integrative allocation mechanisms, whereas publishing services extend from one-time content sales to capability delivery and knowledge services. Therefore, platformization is better understood as a mechanism of value chain reconstruction in intelligent publishing rather than as a purely technical upgrade. Viewed through the lens of platformization, the transformation of intelligent publishing is not reducible to technical enhancement alone but also involves the reorganization of infrastructure, resources, connections, and governance. Accordingly, the future development of intelligent publishing depends on coordinated progress across these dimensions rather than on technological deployment alone.
