Abstract The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) identified high-quality development as the foremost task of building China into a modern socialist country in all respects, which further highlights the overall and long-term significance of high-quality development. Upholding the theme of high-quality development is necessary for adapting to the evolution of the primary challenges in Chinese society as well as changes in China’s stage, condition, and pattern of development. The CPC has attached great importance to cultural development in national governance, deepened the understanding of rules about cultural development, and promoted cultural inheritance and development. Solid progress has been made in building China into a country with a strong socialist culture. The high-quality development of comprehensive social science journals is of contemporary significance for enhancing China's cultural soft power, conducting research from a Chinese perspective, and building a theoretical and academic China grounded in Chinese theories and scholarship. At present, it is a crucial period for comprehensively promoting the construction of a powerful nation and the great cause of national rejuvenation through Chinese-style modernization. In this context, comprehensive social science journals have the ability and shoulder the responsibility of understanding the essence and significance of Xi Jinping's cultural thought. As an important front for the dissemination of ideology and culture, comprehensive social science journals are regarded as the journals with distinct Chinese characteristics. As an integral part of the development of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics, comprehensive social science journals have become a vital platform for advancing the high-quality development of China's independent knowledge system, thanks to their interdisciplinary nature and broad perspective. The context of building China a leading country in culture, interdisciplinary integration, deepening of academic exchanges, and transformations in the digital era have become important factors driving the high-quality development of comprehensive social science journals. In response to the challenges hindering the high-quality development of comprehensive social science journals, we should explore optimization pathways aimed at building the distinctive positioning of the journals. The pathways include taking the strengthening of editorial teams as an opportunity, leveraging digital transformation, and breaking through the myth of quantitative evaluation as a mission, to foster new achievements. With their wide-ranging research domains and diverse range of topics, comprehensive social science journals possess distinctive characteristics. Since the advent of the new era, the development of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics has entered a new stage. It is imperative to fully utilize these academic exchange platforms to further explore the theoretical, historical, and practical significance of advancing the "Chinese Path, " enhancing "Chinese Governance, " and elucidating "Chinese Principles." These journals must aim to present the academic landscape of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics—embodying China's distinct features, style, and vision—from comprehensive, multi-dimensional, and systematic perspectives.
