The engagement of editors in scientific research on theory and application of editing and publishing science has an important role in promoting their professional competence and research capacity, advancing the development of editing and publishing theory, and providing theoretical support for the high-quality development of China’s publishing industry. Compared with other countries, the research in editing and publishing science in China began late, and lags behind that of other developed countries. However, over the past decade, China’s publishing industry has experienced rapid development, attracting increasing attentions from both publishing sector and academic community, thereby leading to more focus on the editing and publishing research of our country. With the continuous integration of digital publishing technologies and industrial development, the research in editing and publishing science in China has entered a period of rapid progress. More and more editors show enthusiasm for conducting research in this field, causing a continuous emergence of research achievements in editing and publishing science. Important progress has been made in the areas such as policy support, content production, marketing and distribution, discipline construction, and publishing integration. A wide range of publishing grants in China played an important role in guiding high-quality development of the publishing industry, promoting academic innovation, and advancing scientific and technological progress. These funding grants include not only national-level projects but those at the provincial, departmental, and municipal levels. For professionals in the publishing industry, successful application for grants serves as an effective means of supporting academic exploration in editing and publishing science, as well as achieving self-improvement. Currently, the outcomes of most grants are mainly in the form of academic papers. Journals specializing in editing and publishing science serve as important platforms for showcasing these academic achievements. Analyzing the funding landscape of academic papers published in editing and publishing journals helps understand the funding status of grantees and the corresponding research achievements. This paper examines seven editing and publishing journals of China, including Acta Editologica, Editorial Friend, Publishing Research, Publishing Journal, Science-Technology and Publication, China Publishing Journal and Chinese Journal of Scientific and Technical Periodicals indexed in the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) for five consecutive years from 2018 to 2022. The data analysis of supported grants covers the papers published in these journals from 2019 to 2023, with data retrieval conducted from April 1st to April 30th, 2024, using the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database. Different aspects of granted research are analyzed, encompassing the number of granted papers, the type of granted projects, differences in granted papers across journals, affiliations of granted authors, and funding situations of granted papers published in the abovementioned journals. Additionally, it identifies existing challenges and proposes improvement measures to support future research. The findings can serve as a reference for talent team building and development of disciplines of editing and publishing science.
